How We Are Organized
The UOIG’s structure consists of a basic four-tiered hierarchy. The top level is occupied by the President. The second tier consists of the Director of Operations, Director of Education, Director of Outreach, and Director of Investments. The sector leaders make up the third tier and cover the Healthcare, Financial, IME, Consumer Goods, and TMT sectors. Senior and Junior Analysts make up the fourth tier. Although structure is necessary for the success of the UOIG, the group’s communication and information flows are very open and flexible from top to bottom. As one of the goals of the UOIG is to enhance the learning and growth of all its members, the management team works directly with the analysts, providing feedback on all aspects of their work. Questions, observations, and suggestions provide the fuel for achievement, and participation from all positions is critical to the group’s success.
-
New members of the Investment Group begin their tenure as junior analysts. In this role, they are responsible for updating an existing portfolio holding through both discounted cash flow (DCF) and comparable company analysis. Each junior analyst is paired with a mentor and participates in weekly training sessions to build foundational skills in equity research and valuation.
By the end of the term, junior analysts are expected to submit a written equity research report accompanied by a valuation summary, and deliver a formal investment pitch to the group. Upon successful completion of this process, and at the discretion of the management team, junior analysts may be promoted to senior analyst.
-
Upon promotion, senior analysts are responsible for pitching equity investment ideas to the Tall Firs and Alumni Fund portfolios. In this role, they are expected to conduct more advanced financial analyses, including three-statement modeling, leveraged buyout (LBO) analysis, precedent transaction analysis, and other valuation methodologies. After completing their first senior analyst pitch, they may become eligible to complete partner pitches.
-
Sector Leaders are selected senior analysts assigned to oversee coverage of the Consumer, TMT (Technology, Media, and Telecommunications), IME (Industrials, Materials, and Energy), Healthcare, and Financial sectors. They are responsible for monitoring their respective industries, providing regular updates to the group on relevant market and industry developments. Additionally, Sector Leaders coordinate with their team of sector analysts to compile and present weekly industry news and insights.
